Synchronous Condensing

Synchronous Condensing is a feature normally available on some peaking power plants. This gives the ability of leaving the generator synchronised to the grid, whilst the turbine is at rest, in order to provided grid reactive power between sources of generation and points of demand. This works similar to a synchronous motor whose shafts is not connected and allowed to spin freely, in order adjust the conditions of the electric transmission grid.

Once the generator is up to speed and synchronised to the grid, the SSS Clutch allows the generator to be disconnected from the driver in order to provided reactive power without producing real power. During peak power demands the driver can be restarted, and automatically connected to the spinning generator via the SSS Clutch, in order to provide fast response peak electric power to the grid.
